What is art?

Hey Juice. Cute photos. That your daughter's work? :-)

Gathered from reading several books on the subject, talking with dozens of artists, art historians, and academics, here's my best shot at a definition:

Art in its pure form is visual communication, no more no less. It follows the same categories of persuasion as any other medium of communication-- logos, ethos, pathos.

To put a finer point on it, it attempts to take you from one place of awareness to another.

Now, I should say that "Modern Art" is a different thing entirely. It is essentially hand-crafted work that has been talked up in value by the artist or the art establishment. The entire lineage of modern art serves ultimately this purpose alone.
